The student can either take all 32 hours of instruction and then proceed to the driving part of the Parent Drivers Ed Program or he can undertake the concurrent method of instruction which requires the student to take the first module titled "Texas Driver Responsibilities - Knowing Texas Traffic Laws". The initial module is six hours long. After the first six hour of instruction the student, provided he or she is at least fifteen years of age or older, the student can take the remaining online class room instruction concurrently with the driving instruction.
There is, of course, the usual driving requirements just as with traditional driver education classes. The driving portion of the driver education course must contain at least 14 hours of behind-the-wheel and in-car practice.
Prior to the student getting behind the wheel of a vehicle he or she must apply for a Texas Instruction Permit from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The student must pass a test in order to receive the instruction permit. Several of the Parent Taught Driver Ed courses include testing materials to help the student study for the permit test.
According to the Texas Department of Safety, the instructor for the course can be a parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian. The instructor must have a valid Texas driver license for the preceding three years.
